Stop doing what you are doing!

January 5th, 2010

If you have read Dr. Stephen Covey’s classic, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, you should recall his quadrant diagram that displays where we spend our time and where we should spend the important time of planning.

I came upon some interesting information form a friend of mine, Kordell Norton, in a newsletter from him. He writes, “. . . don’t START doing things but first STOP doing things.”

Interesting in that the reason we plan is to avoid or eliminate doing those things that keep us from accomplishing other things.

We are all faced with being pulled ’seven ways from Sunday’ day in and day out. Having a set of priorities for the day, the week, the quarter, the year, helps us to decide where our precious time should be spent — doing what is important and not urgent.

Now, if we weren’t doing things that interferred with doing what’s important then we wouldn’t have to plan, would we? We are already doing what we should be doing. But we get involved in doing this and that and at the end of the day, we ask, “What did I get done today? NOTHING!”  That leads to being frustrated, out of control of our own destiny, being a passenger in someone else or something else’s plan.

So, the next two steps and only two steps you need to take are: 1.Stop doing what your are doing! What do you need to stop doing in order to move to the next level? The second next step is use a strategy of DREAM BIG as found in Someday Isle which is available by clicking on the button in the right column and see what might be holding you back from moving forward in 2010!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
